Short History of Wild Rose Ranch In the late 1800's, the Wild Rose Ranch—originally known as the Bowers Ranch— catered to fisherman and was known as one of the hottest trout fishing lakes in America. Both tourists and movie stars frequented the tranquil, secluded ranch. Originally, the Resort was a livestock ranch and farm, fishing and fly fishing resort, and stage stop (with blacksmith shop and a large barn housing horses used for both the stage coach and for guest horse-back riding). The Ranch had a small post office, store, cafe, a few cabins, and some tent sites. RV sites were later added as they became popular. Although very secluded, the Wild Rose Ranch was close enough to Yellowstone National Park to be a place for tourists to enjoy trophy trout fishing in addition to enjoying the amazing sites that Yellowstone National Park had to offer. Since Henry’s Lake was so close to the gold mining towns of Virginia City and Nevada City in Montana, the Lake became the exclusive commercial fishery feeding the local prospectors in those cities. The stage coach or other delivery wagon would load the fish at the Wild Rose Ranch stop and proceed on to various delivery locations. Since the establishment of Wild Rose Ranch in the late 1800's, it has been owned and managed by several different individuals and operated in basically the same fashion as it began. The current owner is McLloyd Barney (Mac), a dentist from Las Vegas, Nevada. The Wild Rose Ranch became Jared's Wild Rose Ranch Resort in early 1992 after Mac’s fishing partner and youngest son, Jared, became ill. Jared was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor on January 1, 1991. He passed away at the age of nine on October 19, 1992. However, before his passing he was able to enjoy one final fishing trip with his father. Upon arriving at Wild Rose Ranch for his final fishing outing, Jared discovered that the Wild Rose Ranch now bore his name. At one point in Jared's short life—while fishing with his dad—Jared requested that his father, "never sell this land." Mac struggled to retain the property due to huge medical debts incurred as a result of Jared's many surgeries and medical treatments. However, Mac's desire to honor Jared’s request was paramount. Mac, had also developed a love of the area and Henry’s Lake. Fishing had always been a sport that Mac enjoyed, and fly fishing on Henry’s had become his favorite pastime and passion. The enjoyment of fishing between father and sons made the effort to maintain Jared’s Wild Rose Resort almost spiritual in nature. Mac would eventually recover from these financial difficulties and consequently, he maintained the property. Mac faced another difficult time when a resort manager quit mid season in 1996. Needing to find a new manager on short notice, Mac asked his son Kevin, if he’d be willing to take on the managerial tasks at the resort. Kevin agreed to move from Las Vegas, Nevada to Island Park, with a good deal of encouragement from his new wife Jennifer. Jennifer had recently been introduced and had immediately developed a fondness to the resort. Kevin became the manager of Jared's Wild Rose Ranch Resort in August of 1996. Kevin is still the current manager. Jared's Wild Rose Ranch Resort still has the rustic cabins enjoyed by the movie stars of yesteryear. Two of the present cabins were frequented by the famous western novelist, Zane Grey, who at one time signed a set of his books for the resort. Although the resort is no longer a livestock ranch, it remains a full service resort for fishermen and women, tourists, couples, partners, and families. Large condominiums, multi bath units, and suites with jetted tubs are perfect for family reunions, business retreats, and large groups. Cabins and small suites are perfect for couples or small groups. The resort maintains a mini store/snack/tackle/and gift shop, arcade/billiard room, mini theater, hot tubs, motor boat/canoe/and paddle boat rentals/, boat launching /docking/, shore fishing, full hookup RV park, campsites, cabins, condos, hotel/motel/ rooms, suites, restaurant, banquet room, wedding reception areas, horseshoe pit, yards and swings for kids, fire pits, BBQ areas, forested area, boathouse with boat motor sales, fishing license sales, and much more.
